I’ve had my share of big wins and I know that for many of you, chasing that big win is as important to you as winning a million dollars at a 128.199.107.129. It is a lot of money, quite frankly, and some people can’t afford to lose it. While luck definitely plays a roll in any number of games, there is a lot of skill involved in any given poker match.
Part of the skill involves knowing when to fit the flop or not. Knowing your odds and understanding your hand relative to the board is extremely important in many situations. There are a lot of smart moves that can be made when you sit down the table, some of which you’ll never be able to see. How many times have you heard a conversation of, “I had the best hand pre-flop” or “He called me pre-flop with his big pocket pair”?
These types of hands, seasoned poker players, know when to fold. They aren’t afraid of busting out or of losing a big pot. They know there’s nothing but hand on the table that will beat them. A lot of these poker players will lay down cards and wait for a better hand. If you’re not sure if you have the best hand, have the discipline to stay in the game without risking a big loss.
If you bust out or lose a nice pot, understand that you weren’t playing well or shouldn’t have entered the pot in the first place. Part of learning to master poker is to losing a lot of losing sessions with very little money invested in the game. You are not going to win everyone you play, so expect losing streaks from time to time. If you just hang in there and recover you’ll always be in the black.
